Arts

Encouraging Creativity

At GCDS, the arts are an integral part of the learning experience. Here students are never asked to choose between loving sports or arts or academics—they are encouraged to explore, and love, them all.

Our youngest students begin music class their first week at Country Day, and throughout their pre-school years, creative projects are part of the everyday learning experience.

Building on this joyful introduction, students begin formal studio art in kindergarten, and as they move to the Middle School, their exploration of various visual and performing arts expands to include woodshop, music technology, art, graphic design, and music, with the option to also take band, chorus, sewing, and piano. In the Upper School, students take an art each trimester, and ninth graders also have the option to choose photography.

Interdisciplinary Connections

Both visual art and music often have interdisciplinary connections to subjects students are studying in social studies, Spanish, or language arts. For example, when fourth graders are preparing for Fiesta Mexicana, they are learning traditional Mexican songs in music and creating Mexican bark paintings in studio art.

In all three divisions, art and technology are increasingly connected as STEAM projects bring the two disciplines together for creative expression.

Building Confidence

GCDS alumni often credit their experience at Country Day with giving them confidence in public speaking. The performing arts program plays a vital role in complementing both the formal public speaking program and classroom presentation experience. Beginning in nursery, students gain experience performing on stage, and each year they become more comfortable learning lines and speaking into a microphone.

Celebrating Our Students

The arts are a wonderful way to celebrate our students. Through numerous performances and the annual Art of Country Day exhibit, the arts are one of the many wonderful experiences that bring our community together.
