Dear Parents,
In response to the tremendous need following the earthquake in Haiti and the desire of our students to help, the Country Day community will be coming together for a fundraising drive to support the efforts of relief organizations there. Because children of different ages have a different understanding of this tragedy, we will hold an assembly for students in grades 6?9 tomorrow morning to discuss our plans, and in our younger grades, discussions will take place in each of the homeroom classes.
Our "Helping Hands and Helping Hearts" drive will run from Friday, January 15 through January 29.
We are suggesting that each child do a chore or some sort of task to earn money to donate. Some of the creative ways that our students have raised money in the past are:
• making and selling jewelry
• performing household chores
• babysitting
• walking a neighbor’s dog
Please have your child put all earnings in an envelope and take it to his/her homeroom teacher. Be sure to include the student’s name and the task he/she performed on the outside of the envelope.
While we recognize that vast amounts of money are needed, we ask that appropriate payments be made for tasks performed. This could be as little as 25 cents. If every one of the 308 million people who live in this country donated 25 cents, over $77,000,000 would be raised. When we share this fact with our children, they can learn the importance of working together and contributing what they can.
Updates regarding this project will be posted on the Community Service page of ourwebsite.
If you have any questions or additional ideas, please email Jen Donnalley, our
community service coordinator, at
jdonnalley@gcds.net.
We hope you will talk with your children about this special schoolwide effort, which helps to teach our children to be socially aware, empathetic, and good neighbors in our global community.
Best,
Adam
