A Compelling Case for Coeducation

Folding the Flag

Founded in 1926, GCDS has been offering student the highest quality preschool, elementary, and middle school education (Nursery through Ninth Grades) for over 84 years. It is by complete design, that half of these students are girls and the other half of the students are boys. Unlike other schools in the public sector, GCDS creates a coeducational program balanced in gender and skilled in teaching different learning styles to yield a rigorous academic environment enriched by the strong social dynamics of coeducation.

Balanced Coeducation is a cornerstone of Country Day’s educational philosophy, reflecting the world where students will one day live and work.  As a family school, we understand the value of educating brothers and sisters together, and of the powerful support families provide when their children share an educational community.

In a coeducational elementary school, as in families, children learn to share, work, play and develop friendships across gender lines.  Because boys and girls have different learning styles, it is critical that they develop an awareness and acceptance of those differences.  As girls and boys play and learn together, they take the essential first step toward building healthy lifelong relationships, both socially and in the workplace.

Celebrating All Cultures

“An understanding and appreciation of human diversity is the foundation for a strong community and for competent, compassionate leadership.  Our students will live in a world more diverse-ethically, racially, and culturally-than any other generation before them.  In keeping with Country Day’s mission, we are committed to educating our students with the critical perspective and compassion needed for the future of our global society.”

~ Adam C. Rohdie, Headmaster

“Diversity” as defined by the Country Day Board of Trustees, “encompasses racial, religious, cultural, and socioeconomic differences, all of which offer different perspectives and experiences that enhance the educational environment.”

GCDS opens the 2010-2011 academic year with 17% of its enrollment, or over 150 students of African, Asian, Hispanic, or Middle Eastern descent.  In place to support the school’s many multicultural activities is Connections, a Parents Association Committee. This committee supports our First-Year Families Committee welcoming incoming families to school, supporting the outreach efforts of the Admissions & Human Resources office, and facilitating activities for students.  Student groups focused on promoting the school's values of Diversity and Inclusion are established in both the Middle and Upper Schools.  CCT, Culturally Connected Tigers, supports students in grades 4-6, and A.W.A.R.E. (Are We All Really Equal?) supports students in grades 7-9.
