Nursery - Grade 5
A firm foundation for a lifetime of learning and achievement
A student's earliest years are crucial to building the frameworks that support a lifetime of learning. At Greenwich Country Day School, this time is rich with exploration and discovery.
Our teachers provide a joyful, nurturing environment where every child is known and understood as an individual.
Each step of the way, students are challenged and supported appropriately—helping them develop into confident, curious, and compassionate young people.
Exploration and Experience
We believe all children learn best by doing, so hands-on activities and multi-sensory experiences play a central role in the curriculum at our Nursery and Pre-Kindergarten levels.
We know that each time our students make a positive choice—to show kindness, to be resourceful, to solve problems creatively—they are building positive habits. Over time, these habits enable our students to be and do their best.
Challenging, Inspiring Academics
The strength of Country Day’s academic program begins with our exceptional teachers, who continually look for the new ways to engage each student, knowing that the best learning happens when a lesson sparks a child's interest, enables them to understand deeply, and encourages their individual self-motivation to learn.
Designed to give students a solid foundation in language arts, math, science, and social studies, the academic curriculum also helps children develop crucial skills such as the ability to analyze information, work together, and think creatively.
In Kindergarten, students also begin Spanish class and start having lessons in the Creativity Lab.
MakerLab, Creativity, and STEAM
Whether students are imagining useful inventions, learning the fundamentals of programming, or creating stop motion animations to accompany their animal research project, our Creativity Lab and MakerLab are constantly buzzing with enthusiastic problem solving, designing, and making.
Arts and Physical Education
From their first days in Nursery, students have regular Physical Education classes and daily opportunities to play outside. Physical exercise is tremendously important for cognitive development, and through fun games our P.E. teachers help students learn about fitness and find activities and sports they love.
Performing and Visual Arts help our young students cultivate creativity, build confidence, and develop new talents and interests. The music program and performances complement the formal public speaking program in helping students become comfortable on stage.
Character at the Core
The development of character has been at the heart of a Country Day education since the school's founding in 1926. For Lower School students, TIGER PRIDE lessons are woven throughout the day, making important aspects of character tangible and memorable.
Daily experiences, such as shaking hands with a teacher at the front door, eating family-style in the dining hall, and morning meeting in their homeroom, support a sense of connection and encourage students to be thoughtful and caring.
