Headlines: The GCDS Athletics Experience

"When the going gets tough, the tough get going."
"It's not whether you get knocked down, it's whether you get up."
"You miss 100% of the shots you do not take."

I could go on and on! Pick your favorite sports quote and undoubtedly it has a deep and direct connection to all other aspects of life. I think my love for athletics was energized as much by playing the games as by learning and living these life's lessons. It was on the fields, and the court that I made friends, overcame setbacks, came together with others for a common purpose, failed, and had some 'pinch me' moments of success.

For almost 100 years, GCDS has used athletics as a powerful way to teach young people the character traits and skills that will make them respected adults. When I had the chance to interview George H. W. Bush—our distinguished alum from the class of 1937—the very first story he told me was about getting yanked out of a football game by his coach, "Unc" Hillard, after he clipped a player from Rippowam CIsqua. Coach Hillard told him, "we don't do that at Country Day; we play with class and character." Some 70 years later, President Bush could recall that moment with crystal clarity.

When you watch this short video of GCDS athletics you will see that we continue to teach these lessons. You will also hear in the voices of the athletes themselves why these lessons are so very important.

Enjoy!
