Upper School Arts (Grades 9 - 12)
"In the arts, students have a safe space to explore, succeed, and at times fail, taking risks and learning what it means to be resilient."
The goal of the Performing & Visual Arts Department is to provide students with the opportunity to discover their own creativity and self-expression within the larger context of community and culture.
The Upper School Arts programs prepare students for their personal and work lives with skills that engage the mind, nurture the creative spirit, and provide a platform for innovative collaboration and critical thinking. In the arts, students have a safe space to explore, succeed, and at times fail, taking risks and learning what it means to be resilient.
Our arts curricula center on skill-based learning that inspires students to confront artistic problems from within, assimilating their skills into presentations based on individual integrity, mutual respect, collaborative creativity, and insightful application of artistic values.
With over twenty areas of study taught by talented teachers who themselves are artists and performers, we provide opportunities for students to acquire advanced artistic skills that form the underpinnings of an informed appreciation of the arts and inspiration for a lifetime.
Our Upper School Dance Company—Ambush—trains in jazz, modern, hip hop, and lyrical, with a strong emphasis on technique and our Dancesport program offers training designed to develop skills through extreme aerobic exercises.
Visual arts instruction includes foundations, studio art, ceramics, art history, digital imaging, graphic design, portfolio development, and fabrication.
GCDS Upper School Theater offerings include a main stage production each fall (play) and spring (musical), a workshop production in the spring, Intersession programs that focus on production and performance, and a musical theatre workshop.
A myriad of opportunities are provided for musical performance, including Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble “The Tiger Growls,” String Orchestra, Concert Choir, Advanced Vocal Ensemble: “The Tiger Tones,” Songwriting and Composition, and Music Technology.
