Greenwich Country Day School's varsity girls volleyball team captured their second consecutive New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) Class B Championship, decisively defeating Groton School 3-0 in the final at Kingswood Oxford School in West Hartford.
Cara Lehmitz '26 capped her exceptional season by earning NEPSAC Volleyball Player of the Year honors for the second consecutive year, becoming the first GCDS athlete to win the prestigious individual award in back-to-back seasons.
The championship represents a historic achievement for a program celebrating championships at both levels. The JV team also won the Fairchester Athletic Association (FAA) JV Volleyball Tournament for the second consecutive year, demonstrating program-wide excellence.
Three seniors reached remarkable career milestones this season: Grace Gapen '26 recorded 1,000 kills, Caroline Cabrera '26 achieved 1,000 digs, and Cara Lehmitz '26 surpassed 1,000 kills. The trio's accomplishments underscore the sustained excellence that has defined GCDS volleyball since the school expanded to high school in 2019.
"The founding members of our GCDS volleyball program finished their senior season celebrating back-to-back NEPSAC victories; a herculean accomplishment in just four seasons as a varsity program and something most schools can only dream about," said Coach Withrow.
The program's trajectory has been extraordinary. Seven years ago, these seniors were sixth graders learning fundamental volleyball skills. Five years ago, they won the JV FAA championship. Now, they leave GCDS as two-time New England champions with individual accolades and milestone achievements that will define the program's legacy.
