The GCDS boys varsity tennis team made history on Monday afternoon, completing a dominant performance to take home the school’s first Fairchester Athletic Association (FAA) Tournament team championship. The team followed up on Thursday, May 15 by securing the FAA regular season championship following a thrilling 4-3 win over Brunswick.

The tournament championship was held on May 12 at Greens Farms Academy in Westport, CT, where the team competed over two days in singles and doubles competitions. Joaquin Urrutia ‘28 won the third and fourth singles individual championship, while Dylan Ever ‘25 and Lucas Hochberg ‘26 won the doubles team championship.

Three other Tigers finished as runners-up in their respective championship tournaments. Ben Schuessler ‘26 was the runner-up in the first flight singles championship, while Cristian Pizzimbono ’25 and Asher Rosen ‘26 finished second in the doubles team championship.

Overall, we had 10 Tigers compete over the two-day tournament, and the team finished with an astounding 19-3 record to take home the win. Head Coach Steve Feder was extremely proud of his team’s poise, camaraderie, and focus.

"I am so proud of our team for their commitment to each other. Tennis is usually an individual sport but our players are completely invested in our team's success. Each player has made sacrifices to put the team first and that has led to amazing results.”

For Director of Athletics Tim Helstein, the boys tennis championship is meaningful in multiple ways. “There are so many reasons to celebrate this achievement for our tennis team. It's the first in program history, these boys have grown together as a team that supports each member, and my favorite reason is the joy I have when watching this team play. They are a family that brings passion and excitement to the game. What the boys have accomplished was earned through their dedication to the team and devotion to the sport.”

Each year, for most FAA sports, the league crowns both a regular season and a tournament champion. The regular season champion is the school with the best record in league play throughout the season, and that team is awarded the No. 1 seed for the league’s postseason tournament. In tennis, individual players and doubles teams are seeded for the tournament based on their regular season performance, and the team championship is determined by the number of points accumulated across all of the matches.

The team finished the regular season with an undefeated record, and earned the No. 1 seed in this weekend’s New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) Class B Tournament.
